One of the greatest creators of Italian comic opera in the 18th century, Domenico Cimarosa had his music education in Naples. In 1787 Cimarosa assumed position of  Maestro di Cappella to Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg. Later he was appointed composer at the court of the Emperor Leopold II of Austria. Cimarosa's relationship with the revolutionary republicans resulted in his short imprisonment.
